Electrifying the Seine River fleet for Paris 2024
In preparation for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are to open at the end of July, Haropa Port and the French national waterways authority (Voies navigables de France - VNF) are advancing the decarbonisation of river transport.
Notable strides have been made in transitioning river fleets to greener energy, with initiatives including the integration of electric and hybrid propulsion systems and the improvement infrastructure for the electrification of quaysides.
By the Olympics, it is planned that 30 vessels will have electric or hybrid propulsion, a move supported by a EUR 5 million increase in governmental funding. The installation of additional electricity terminals and the continued development of electric propulsion are key to achieving a majority electric fleet by 2037. (pb)
